Jesus said to have faith in God (Mark
11:22). The apostle Paul in his epistles used the term: Faith in Jesus Christ.
The phrase "faith in Christ" or similar phrases are found many times
in the New Testament. Let’s look at a few examples and see what we can learn
about: Faith in Jesus Christ.
Let’s begin in Romans 3:21: "But now the righteousness of God apart
from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, {22} even
the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on
all who believe. For there is no difference; {23} for all have sinned and fall
short of the glory of God, {24} being justified freely by His grace through the
redemption that is in Christ Jesus, {25} whom God set forth as a propitiation by
His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in
His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed,
{26} to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just
and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus" (Romans 3:21-26
NKJV).
From this passage we see that God's righteousness comes through Faith in
Jesus Christ. We also see that grace, justification and redemption comes through
Jesus Christ. The apostle Paul explained justification in Romans 5:9-10:
"Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved
from wrath through Him. {10} For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to
God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be
saved by His life" (Rom 5:9-10 NKJV).
Justification is being in a right standing or relationship with God. We are
justified by the blood of Jesus Christ and then we are reconciled to God and we
are saved by Jesus’ life. This justification comes through faith in Christ and
His work of redemption (Romans 3:24, 1 Corinthians 1:30).
This redemption comes through Jesus’ blood. He was crucified and He died
for us: "In Him (Jesus Christ) we have redemption through His blood, the
forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace" (Eph 1:7 NKJV).
We have been redeemed (Galatians 3:13) and bought with a price of the blood
of Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 6:20). This redemption ties back into faith as we
have already read in the passage of Romans 3:21-26.
Sons of God
It is only through faith in Christ that men can become
the sons of God: "For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ
Jesus" (Gal 3:26 NKJV).
We have a fantastic promise from Jesus Christ that we can
become sons of God. Jesus was giving His sermon on the mount and He included the
following statement: "Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called
sons of God" (Matthew 5:9 NKJV). In Luke 20:36 Jesus stated that the sons
of God would be the sons of the resurrection.
The apostle Paul adds to this saying that the sons of God
must have the Spirit of God: "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God,
these are sons of God" (Rom 8:14 NKJV).
To be a son of God we must have faith in our saviour Jesus
Christ.
Faith in Christ is Linked with Love
Faith is one of the fruits of God’s Holy Spirit (Galatians
5:22-23). Faithfulness must be shown to others. We need to utilize this fruit of
the Spirit and one way is through love. The apostle Paul said: "Therefore I
also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all
the saints" ..... {17} "that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith;
that you, being rooted and grounded in love" (Ephesians 1:15-17 NKJV).
The apostle Paul makes another reference of this to the
Church in Ephesus: "Peace to the brethren, and love with faith,
from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ" (Eph 6:23 NKJV).
Faith and love is mentioned in the same verse in the
"love chapter": "And now abide faith, hope, love, these three;
but the greatest of these is love" (1 Corinthians 13:13 NKJV).
Boldness and Confidence
Through faith in Jesus we can have boldness and confidence:
"in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith
in Him" Eph 3:12 NKJV).
Peter, John and the disciples prayed to God that they could
have boldness in preaching His word: "Now, Lord, look on their threats, and
grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your
word," ... {31} "And when they had prayed, the place where they were
assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit,
and they spoke the word of God with boldness" (Acts 4:29-31 NKJV).
Boldness comes from having faith in Christ Jesus (1 Timothy
3:13).
Patience of the Saints
The apostle John gave the definition of patience in his
prophetic book of Revelation: "Here is the patience of the saints;
here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus"
(Rev 14:12 NKJV). Notice that this definition of patience ties in with the
faith of Jesus.
In Conclusion: We must have faith in Jesus Christ. It
is only through Him that we can have salvation. It is only through His name that
we can be saved (Acts 4:12). It is only through Him that we will be resurrected
to eternal life (Luke 20:36, John 6:44).
Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).
