Lesson: White Throne Judgment

Email: info@icogsfg.org

SCRIPTURE READING: Revelation 19-20

GOLDEN TEXT:  Revelation 20:11-12

1. Does Revelation 19-20 give a chronological time frame of end time events when Christ will return? Why is there great rejoicing in heaven? (Revelation 19:7-9.) Is there a blessing on those who are called to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb? (Verse 9.)

2. Does this prophecy show Jesus Christ, on a white horse establishing His Kingdom? (Revelation 19:11-16.) Are the Beast and his armies defeated? (Revelation 19:17-21.)

3. Is Satan bound for 1,000 years in the bottomless pit? (Revelation 20:1-3.) Are the martyred saints - the dead in Christ - to receive their glorious spiritual bodies, and rule with Christ for 1,000 years? (Revelation 20:4.)

4. Is being a part of the first resurrection the goal and hope of every true Christian? (1 Thessalonians 4:13-17.)

5. When the Saints are resurrected, will they be composed of spirit and not physical matter? (1 Corinthians 15:42-44.) Will we mortals put on immortality? (Verse 54.)

6. Will the Saints who have been resurrected in the first resurrection have eternal life and not be able to die? (Matthew 22:30, Luke 20:34-38.) What will our "spiritual body" be like? (1 John 3:2, 1 Corinthians 15:5-8 ,44, Acts 1:3, Matthew 28:9, John 20:24-29, Luke 24:37-39.) We will be like Jesus was.

7. Are the Saints in this "first resurrection" blessed and holy? (Revelation 20:6.) Is the "first resurrection" also called the "better resurrection?" (Hebrew 11:35.) Does the second death have any power over the Saints who will be resurrected in this first resurrection? (Revelation 20:6.) Will the Saints rule with Jesus Christ for a thousand years? (Same verse.) Will they rule and reign on the earth? (Revelation 5:10, 2:26-27,20:4.)

Note: Notice the terms ‘better resurrection" and "first resurrection" are hints that there are more than one resurrection.

8. What happens to the "rest of the dead", those who have died without the knowledge of salvation? (Revelation 20:5.)

Note: The "rest of the dead" are those who have never had their chance to understand God’s truth - they did not live again until the 1,000 years were finished.

9. After the 1,000 years are over, will Satan be released from the prison of restraint where he has been kept during the Millennium? (Revelation 20:7.) Will he go out to deceive the people of all nations? (Verse 8.) What is their fate? (Verse 9.) What then happens to Satan? (Verse 10.)

Note: Notice carefully the word "are" in the KJV and the NKJV of verse 10 is printed in italics, which indicates that the translators added it to the original inspired text in an attempt to make the meaning more clear, but they only succeeded in confusing the meaning. Remember that the "beast" and the "false prophet" were cast into the Lake of Fire (Rev. 19:20) where they were consumed over 1,000 years before! Let’s notice how the NIV translation translates Revelation 20:10: "And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever."

Note also that fire can not hurt Satan because he is a spirit, not flesh and blood. His punishment is terribly tormenting, because he can do nothing. God has sentenced him, rendered him helpless and unable to deceive the "rest of the dead" who are now resurrected to have their first chance for salvation and to understand God’s Master Plan of salvation.

10. What did the apostle John say would happen following Satan’s final rebellion and punishment? (Revelation 20:11-12.) Is this the time of the White Throne Judgment? (Verse 11.) Is this a time of the second resurrection when the "rest of the dead" stand before the throne of Jesus Christ, the Son of God? (Verse 12, John 1:1-3.) Who will be resurrected in this Last Great Judgment? (Matthew 11:21-27.) Did Jesus say that Tyre and Sidon had not received the witness of the gospel? (Verse 21.) If the people of those cities had heard the gospel would they have repented? (Verse 21.) Wasn’t the same true of Sodom? (Verse 23.) Then, to be fair, they ought to hear the good news gospel shouldn’t they? Are the people of Tyre and Sidon, as well as Sodom, yet to hear the message of the gospel? (Verses 22-24.) Did Jesus speak of a time of Judgment when they would be given the opportunity to understand what He had been preaching to the people of Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum? (Same verses.) Did Jesus also foretell of the resurrection of the heathen people of Nineveh and the resurrection of the Queen (Sheba) of the South? (Matthew 12:41-42.) Will those of Palestine in the time of Christ who were unable to understand God’s plan also be resurrected to a time of judgment? (Same verses.)

11. Does the prophet Ezekiel describe a Valley of Dry Bones? (Ezekiel 37:1-14.) Is he describing a resurrection of the "whole house of Israel" (Ezekiel 37:11.)

12. What are the books that are opened in Revelation 20:12? Why is the Book of Life opened? (Same verse.) Are the resurrected dead judged "according to their works?" (Revelation 20:12-14.) What is the fate of those whose names are not written in the Book of Life? (Verse 15.)

Note: The Greek word for "books" is "biblia" and it is from the exact word that we derive our English word "Bible"! The books that are opened are the books of your Bible! The billions of people who will be resurrected from the dead in this second resurrection will have their minds opened to the truth of God and the Bible and they will be judged "according to their works" just the same as we in the church are being judged now (1 Peter 4:17.)

Why was the "Book of Life" Opened? So more names could be added to receive the gift of eternal life (Romans 6:23.)

In Conclusion: The great White Throne Judgement pictures the time when billions of people will be resurrected to mortal life and given their opportunity for salvation. This time will picture a time of reunion, hope and healing.

Scriptures

Scripture Reading:

(Revelation 19 NKJV) After these things I heard a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, "Alleluia! Salvation and glory and honor and power belong to the Lord our God! {2} "For true and righteous are His judgments, because He has judged the great harlot who corrupted the earth with her fornication; and He has avenged on her the blood of His servants shed by her." {3} Again they said, "Alleluia! Her smoke rises up forever and ever!" {4} And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who sat on the throne, saying, "Amen! Alleluia!" {5} Then a voice came from the throne, saying, "Praise our God, all you His servants and those who fear Him, both small and great!" {6} And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, "Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns! {7} "Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready." {8} And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. {9} Then he said to me, "Write: 'Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!' " And he said to me, "These are the true sayings of God." {10} And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, "See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy."

The Rider on the White Horse

{11} Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. {12} His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. {13} He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. {14} And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. {15} Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. {16} And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. {17} Then I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in the midst of heaven, "Come and gather together for the supper of the great God, {18} "that you may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, both small and great." {19} And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. {20} Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone. {21} And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. And all the birds were filled with their flesh.

The Thousand Years

(Revelation 20 NKJV) Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. {2} He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; {3} and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while. {4} And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. {5} But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. {6} Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.

Satan's Doom

{7} Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison {8} and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea. {9} They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them. {10} The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

The Dead Are Judged

{11} Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. {12} And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. {13} The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. {14} Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. {15} And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

1-3.) See Scripture Reading.

4.) (1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 NKJV) But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. {14} For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. {15} For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. {16} For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. {17} Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

5. (1 Corinthians 15:42-44 NKJV) So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. {43} It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. {44} It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

6. (Matthew 22:30 NKJV) "For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven.

(Luke 20:34-38 NKJV) And Jesus answered and said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage. {35} "But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; {36} "nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. {37} "But even Moses showed in the burning bush passage that the dead are raised, when he called the Lord 'the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' {38} "For He is not the God of the dead but of the living, for all live to Him."

(1 John 3:2 NKJV) Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.

(1 Corinthians 15:5-8 NKJV) and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. {6} After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep. {7} After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. {8} Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time.

(1 Corinthians 15:44 NKJV) It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

(Acts 1:3 NKJV) to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.

(Matthew 28:9 NKJV) And as they went to tell His disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, "Rejoice!" So they came and held Him by the feet and worshiped Him.

(John 20:24-29 NKJV) Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. {25} The other disciples therefore said to him, "We have seen the Lord." So he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe." {26} And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, "Peace to you!" {27} Then He said to Thomas, "Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing." {28} And Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!" {29} Jesus said to him, "Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

(Luke 24:37-39 NKJV) But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit. {38} And He said to them, "Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? {39} "Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Handle Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have."

7) (Revelation 20:6 NKJV) Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.

(Hebrews 11:35 NKJV) Women received their dead raised to life again. And others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.

(Revelation 5:10 NKJV) And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth."

(Revelation 2:26-27 NKJV) "And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations; {27} 'He shall rule them with a rod of iron; They shall be dashed to pieces like the potter's vessels'; as I also have received from My Father;

(Revelation 20:4 NKJV) And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

10.) (John 1:1-3 NKJV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. {2} He was in the beginning with God. {3} All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

(Matthew 11:21-27 NKJV) "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. {22} "But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you. {23} "And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades; for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. {24} "But I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you."

Rest for the Weary

{25} At that time Jesus answered and said, "I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes. {26} "Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. {27} "All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.

(Matthew 12:41-42 NKJV) "The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here. {42} "The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here.

11.) The Valley of Dry Bones

(Ezekiel 37:1-14 NKJV) The hand of the LORD came upon me and brought me out in the Spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley; and it was full of bones. {2} Then He caused me to pass by them all around, and behold, there were very many in the open valley; and indeed they were very dry. {3} And He said to me, "Son of man, can these bones live?" So I answered, "O Lord GOD, You know." {4} Again He said to me, "Prophesy to these bones, and say to them, 'O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! {5} 'Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: "Surely I will cause breath to enter into you, and you shall live. {6} "I will put sinews on you and bring flesh upon you, cover you with skin and put breath in you; and you shall live. Then you shall know that I am the LORD."' " {7} So I prophesied as I was commanded; and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and suddenly a rattling; and the bones came together, bone to bone. {8} Indeed, as I looked, the sinews and the flesh came upon them, and the skin covered them over; but there was no breath in them. {9} Also He said to me, "Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live."' " {10} So I prophesied as He commanded me, and breath came into them, and they lived, and stood upon their feet, an exceedingly great army. {11} Then He said to me, "Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They indeed say, 'Our bones are dry, our hope is lost, and we ourselves are cut off!' {12} "Therefore prophesy and say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, O My people, I will open your graves and cause you to come up from your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel. {13} "Then you shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O My people, and brought you up from your graves. {14} "I will put My Spirit in you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I, the LORD, have spoken it and performed it," says the LORD.'"

12.) (Acts 4:12 NKJV) "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."

(1 Peter 4:17 NKJV) For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God?
