Lesson: Revelation 14 -The Lamb and the 144,000

Email: info@icogsfg.org

SCRIPTURE READING: Revelation  14:1-20

GOLDEN TEXT:  Revelation 14:4

Revelation 14 is an inset chapter and it shows why you don’t want to take the mark of the beast.

1. What did the apostle John see, in his vision, standing on Mount Zion? (Revelation 14:1). Is Jesus compared to a lamb? (John 1:29, 36). Was Jesus sacrificed like a Passover Lamb for us? (1 Cor. 5:7-8). Was Jesus slain from the foundation of the world? (Revelation 13:8). John sees a Lamb which represents Jesus Christ, who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29), and it is only with His blood that cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1:7) so that we can have salvation.

2. What was written on the foreheads of the 144,000? (Revelation 14:1). On the night of Jesus’ last Passover on the earth, did Jesus pray to God the Father for His disciples saying "I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world" and "keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are"? (John 17:6, 11,12, 26).

Note: John saw 144,000 Saints who had been resurrected in the first resurrection standing with Jesus. God the Father’s name is written on the foreheads of these truly converted Saints who have God’s Holy Spirit. The forehead is symbolic of the person’s will, in other words, the character of God is written into their will, their mind or conscienceness of the people who are saved by the blood of Jesus Christ. They have the sign of God in their forehead.

Note: If you carry the ‘sign’ of the true God you will suffer from the beast, but if you carry the ‘mark of the beast’ you will suffer from God. In the future you are going to suffer, you just have to decide who you are going to honor in your suffering, God or the Devil?

3. Were the 144,000 redeemed from the earth? (Revelation 14:3). How were they redeemed? (Revelation 5:9). Were they bought with a price? (1 Corinthians 7:23, 2 Peter 2:1). The 144,000 were redeemed from the earth, and they were redeemed by the blood of the slain Jesus Christ and this is the price that it cost for our redemption.

4. Have the 144,000 been defiled by women or are they virgins? (Revelation 14:4-5). Have all men and women sinned and have they fallen short of the glory of God? (Romans 3:23).

Note: This defilement is talking about spiritual defilement. Everyone has sinned, but the only way a person can be without fault before God is by the blood of the Lamb and to be forgiven of our sins and to be redeemed by our savior Jesus Christ. If the 144,000 had never sinned then they would have not needed to be redeemed. The 144,000 are undefiled like virgins in that they have been forgiven and their sins wiped out and they could then come before God as if they never had sinned.

5. Do the 144,000 follow the Lamb wherever He goes? (Revelation 14:4, 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17). Are they firstfruits to God and to the Lamb? (Same verse). Is Jesus the firstborn from the dead? (Colossians 1:18). Does that make Him the first of the firstfruits? (1 Corinthians 15:20,23). Are the resurrected Saints also called firstfruits? (Same verses). One of God’s seven annual Holy Days is called Pentecost (Acts 2 and Leviticus 23:15-22), and firstfruits are a part of the symbolism of this spring time Holy Day. A point to ponder is that the first resurrection may occur on the Feast of Pentecost.

6. Is the New Testament Church commissioned to preach the gospel of the kingdom of God to all the world as a witness to all nations? (Matthew 24:14). Is the Church also commissioned to make disciples, baptize them and to teach them the things that Jesus commanded them to? (Matthew 28:19-20). Did the apostle John see an angel flying in heaven preaching the gospel to the people who dwell on the earth? (Revelation 14:6). What else did this angel proclaim? (Verse 7).

7. What was the message of the second angel? (Revelation 14:8). Did this Babylon made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication? (Same verse).

Note: The Babylon founded by King Nebuchadnezzar had fallen many generations before the apostle John. Our thoughts of this Babylon of John’s vision would turn to the city of Rome which history would tell us was Babylon the great, the Mother of harlots (Revelation 17:5). This Babylon the great is a great false church and religious system that has made all the nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication of her religious holidays and political influence upon the nations of the world. Many of these pagan customs existed in Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylon and have been passed down through succeeding empires down to our day and will continue until the time that Christ returns and crushes the system as described in Daniel 2:44.

8. What did the third angel say to John? (Revelation 14:9-11). What happens if someone receives the mark of the beast on his forehead or on his hand? Will he drink of the wine of the wrath of God? Will he be tormented with fire and brimstone? Will the smoke of his torment ascend up forever? Will he not have rest day or night?

Note: The term God’s wrath is referring to the seven last plagues which will be explained in Revelation 16. To be tormented with fire and brimstone is a reference to the second death of the lake of fire (Revelation 20:14-15) in which anyone not found written in the Book of Life will be cast into the lake of fire. Notice that it is the smoke of his torment that ascends up forever, not that the torment goes on forever. In the second death hell fire these wicked individuals will have been vaporized by the fire and brimstone like a nuclear explosion and the smoke will ascend up into the atmosphere and dissipate and be in the atmosphere forever. The term "they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast" is a reference to those people who know the truth about the mark of the beast and accept it and as a result they will have mental anguish because they know that they only have a short time to live, and then they will cease to exist for all of eternity when they will be consumed in the flames of hell.

9. Are the true Saints, those who are converted, to be patient, have faith and to keep God’s Ten Commandments? (Revelation 14:12).

10. Is there a blessing for those who die in the Lord in these last days? (Revelation 14: 13). If they die in the Lord, not having taken the mark of the beast, then they will be in the first resurrection, which will be a great blessing.

11. Did the apostle John look and see a white cloud and on the cloud did he see One like the Son of Man, having on His head a golden crown, and in His hand a sharp sickle? (Revelation 14:14). Is Jesus Christ the Son of Man? (Matthew 16:13-17). Will Jesus return coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory? (Matthew 24:30, Acts 1:9-11). Do you use a sickle to cut and harvest the grain? (Mark 4:29).

12. Did John see an angel come out of the temple crying with a loud voice to Him who sat on the cloud and say: "Thrust in Your sickle and reap, for the time has come for You to reap, for the harvest of the earth is ripe?" (Revelation 14:15). Did the one who sat on the cloud thrust in His sickle on the earth, and was the earth reaped. (Verse 16). Did Jesus Christ in His Olivet Prophecy say that when He returned that He would send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet and that they would gather together His elect from one end of heaven to the other? (Matthew 24:31).

Note: This is referring to the second coming of Jesus Christ and the first resurrection of the Saints. Israel has three harvest seasons, two are in the spring which are the barley harvest which occurs at Passover time and wheat harvest which occurs at Pentecost time and the latter harvest, the fruit harvest, which occurs in the fall of the year which is at the feast of Tabernacle time. The spiritual harvest of the first resurrection is tied into the physical harvest and the first resurrection of the Saints will probably occur on Pentecost.

13. Did the apostle John now see another angel come out of the temple which is in heaven also having a sharp sickle? (Revelation 14:17). Did he then also see another angel come out from the altar, who had power over fire, and did he cry with a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, "Thrust in your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth, for her grapes are fully ripe?" (Verse 18).

Note: The reference to the "clusters of the vine of the earth" is referring to unrepentant mankind in which "her grapes are fully ripe" of her sins, rebellion against God and taking of the mark of the beast in which Jesus Christ said that they would drink of the wine of the wrath of God (Revelation 14:9-10).

14. Did this angel thrust his sickle into the earth and gather the vine of the earth, and did he throw it into the great winepress of the wrath of God? (Revelation 14:19). Was the winepress trampled outside the city of Jerusalem? (Verse 20). Did blood come out of the winepress, up to the horses' bridles, for one thousand six hundred furlongs?

Note: This harvest will be a physical harvest in which the wicked that will gather outside the city of Jerusalem, referring to the 200 million man army (Revelation 9:16), that will be slain and their blood will fill the valley up to 5 foot deep and will stretch for 180 miles. The bloody remains of the rebellious soldiers will fill Palestine’s world famous valley all the way from Megiddo southward, passing right by Jerusalem and extending south into the land of ancient Edom. The word ‘Armageddon’ is a Greek form of the Hebrew name har Megiddo. This is the site of the ancient city of Megiddo which overlooks the Plain of Esdraelon (also known as the Valley of Jezreel) which is about 55 miles north of Jerusalem, and about 15 miles inland from the Mediterranean Sea.

15. Does Isaiah the prophet prophesy about Jesus Christ executing His wrath in the land of Edom? (Isaiah 63:1-6). Does this passage refer to a winepress and blood upon His garments? Is He angry and furious?

16. Did the prophet Joel prophesy about this end time event? (Joel 3:9-16). Did he say: that the nations would be awakened and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat? (Verse 12). Did he say: "Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, go down; For the winepress is full, The vats overflow; For their wickedness is great?" (Verse 13). Did he mention that "the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision?" (Verse 14).

Note: "Jehoshaphat" means "judgment of Jehovah" (Peloubet’s Bible Dictionary). This very place bears the name "Valley of Judgment of Jehovah". Jehovah or Yehovah is from the Hebrew name YHVH and it is translated into the English word LORD with capital letters. Strongs Concordance #3068 defines this as: "Yehovah, yeh-ho-vaw'; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jeho-vah, Jewish national name of God:--Jehovah, the Lord."

17. Lets look at this question again in regards to the ‘wrath of God’: Did this angel thrust his sickle into the earth and gather the vine of the earth, and did he throw it into the great winepress of the wrath of God? (Revelation 14:19, Psalms 78:1-38). Did God give His Law to Israel? (Psalms 78:1). Did God tell them to teach His Law to their children? (Vs. 5). Were the Israelites to set their hope in God and not to forget His works? (Vs. 7). Did they refuse to walk in His Law? (Vs. 10). Did they sin and rebel against God? (Vs. 17). Did they test God in their heart? (Vs. 18). Did they question God’s ability to give them bread and meat? (Vs. 20). Did God become furious and angry? (Vs. 21). Why did God become furious and angry, was it because they did not believe in God and did not trust in Him saving them? (Vs. 23). Did the ‘wrath of God’ come against them? (Vs. 31). Did God kill the stoutest of them and strike down the choice men of Israel? (Vs. 31). Did they continue to sin? (Vs. 32). After God slew them, did they seek Him earnestly? (Vs. 34). Did they remember that God was their rock and their Redeemer? (Vs. 35). Did God forgive their iniquity and not destroy them? (Vs. 38). Did God turn His anger away from them and not stir up all His wrath?

8. Does the ‘wrath of God’ abide on you if you don’t believe that Jesus is the Son of God? (John 3:36 ). Will the ‘wrath of God’ be imposed on those who are ungodly and unrighteous and upon those who suppress the truth in unrighteousness? (Romans 1:18). Does the ‘wrath of God’ come upon the sons of disobedience? (Ephesians 5:6). Does the ‘wrath of God’ involve God’s indignation and torment with fire and brimstone? (Revelation 14:10). Will the ‘wrath of God’ be complete after the seven last plagues are poured out upon the earth and mankind? (Revelation 15:1, 16:1).

Note: The terms "day of the Lord" and the "wrath of God" are often used in the Bible interchangeably and therefore can describe the same time and the same event.

Scripture Reading:

The Lamb and the 144,000

(Revelation 14 NKJV) Then I looked, and behold, a Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand, having His Father's name written on their foreheads. {2} And I heard a voice from heaven, like the voice of many waters, and like the voice of loud thunder. And I heard the sound of harpists playing their harps. {3} They sang as it were a new song before the throne, before the four living creatures, and the elders; and no one could learn that song except the hundred and forty-four thousand who were redeemed from the earth. {4} These are the ones who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins. These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These were redeemed from among men, being firstfruits to God and to the Lamb. {5} And in their mouth was found no deceit, for they are without fault before the throne of God.

The Three Angels

{6} Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth; to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people; {7} saying with a loud voice, "Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water." {8} And another angel followed, saying, "Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she has made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication." {9} Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, "If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, {10} "he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. {11} "And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name." {12} Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. {13} Then I heard a voice from heaven saying to me, "Write: 'Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.' " "Yes," says the Spirit, "that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them."

The Harvest of the Earth

{14} Then I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and on the cloud sat One like the Son of Man, having on His head a golden crown, and in His hand a sharp sickle. {15} And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to Him who sat on the cloud, "Thrust in Your sickle and reap, for the time has come for You to reap, for the harvest of the earth is ripe." {16} So He who sat on the cloud thrust in His sickle on the earth, and the earth was reaped. {17} Then another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle. {18} And another angel came out from the altar, who had power over fire, and he cried with a loud cry to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, "Thrust in your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth, for her grapes are fully ripe." {19} So the angel thrust his sickle into the earth and gathered the vine of the earth, and threw it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. {20} And the winepress was trampled outside the city, and blood came out of the winepress, up to the horses' bridles, for one thousand six hundred furlongs.

(Matthew 24:30 NKJV) "Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

(Acts 1:9-11 NKJV) Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. {10} And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, {11} who also said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven."

(Revelation 9:16 NKJV) Now the number of the army of the horsemen was two hundred million; I heard the number of them.

15. God's Day of Vengeance and Redemption

(Isaiah 63:1-6 NKJV) Who is this who comes from Edom, With dyed garments from Bozrah, This One who is glorious in His apparel, Traveling in the greatness of His strength?; "I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save." {2} Why is Your apparel red, And Your garments like one who treads in the winepress? {3} "I have trodden the winepress alone, And from the peoples no one was with Me. For I have trodden them in My anger, And trampled them in My fury; Their blood is sprinkled upon My garments, And I have stained all My robes. {4} For the day of vengeance is in My heart, And the year of My redeemed has come. {5} I looked, but there was no one to help, And I wondered That there was no one to uphold; Therefore My own arm brought salvation for Me; And My own fury, it sustained Me. {6} I have trodden down the peoples in My anger, Made them drunk in My fury, And brought down their strength to the earth."

16. (Joel 3:9-16 NKJV) Proclaim this among the nations: "Prepare for war! Wake up the mighty men, Let all the men of war draw near, Let them come up. {10} Beat your plowshares into swords And your pruning hooks into spears; Let the weak say, 'I am strong.'" {11} Assemble and come, all you nations, And gather together all around. Cause Your mighty ones to go down there, O LORD. {12} "Let the nations be wakened, and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; For there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations. {13} Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, go down; For the winepress is full, The vats overflow; For their wickedness is great." {14} Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision. {15} The sun and moon will grow dark, And the stars will diminish their brightness. {16} The LORD also will roar from Zion, And utter His voice from Jerusalem; The heavens and earth will shake; But the LORD will be a shelter for His people, And the strength of the children of Israel.

17. Psalm 78

(Psalms 78:1-38 NKJV) Give ear, O my people, to my law; Incline your ears to the words of my mouth. {2} I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old, {3} Which we have heard and known, And our fathers have told us. {4} We will not hide them from their children, Telling to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, And His strength and His wonderful works that He has done. {5} For He established a testimony in Jacob, And appointed a law in Israel, Which He commanded our fathers, That they should make them known to their children; {6} That the generation to come might know them, The children who would be born, That they may arise and declare them to their children, {7} That they may set their hope in God, And not forget the works of God, But keep His commandments; {8} And may not be like their fathers, A stubborn and rebellious generation, A generation that did not set its heart aright, And whose spirit was not faithful to God. {9} The children of Ephraim, being armed and carrying bows, Turned back in the day of battle. {10} They did not keep the covenant of God; They refused to walk in His law, {11} And forgot His works And His wonders that He had shown them. {12} Marvelous things He did in the sight of their fathers, In the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan. {13} He divided the sea and caused them to pass through; And He made the waters stand up like a heap. {14} In the daytime also He led them with the cloud, And all the night with a light of fire. {15} He split the rocks in the wilderness, And gave them drink in abundance like the depths. {16} He also brought streams out of the rock, And caused waters to run down like rivers. {17} But they sinned even more against Him By rebelling against the Most High in the wilderness. {18} And they tested God in their heart By asking for the food of their fancy. {19} Yes, they spoke against God: They said, "Can God prepare a table in the wilderness? {20} Behold, He struck the rock, So that the waters gushed out, And the streams overflowed. Can He give bread also? Can He provide meat for His people?" {21} Therefore the LORD heard this and was furious; So a fire was kindled against Jacob, And anger also came up against Israel, {22} Because they did not believe in God, And did not trust in His salvation. {23} Yet He had commanded the clouds above, And opened the doors of heaven, {24} Had rained down manna on them to eat, And given them of the bread of heaven. {25} Men ate angels' food; He sent them food to the full. {26} He caused an east wind to blow in the heavens; And by His power He brought in the south wind. {27} He also rained meat on them like the dust, Feathered fowl like the sand of the seas; {28} And He let them fall in the midst of their camp, All around their dwellings. {29} So they ate and were well filled, For He gave them their own desire. {30} They were not deprived of their craving; But while their food was still in their mouths, {31} The wrath of God came against them, And slew the stoutest of them, And struck down the choice men of Israel. {32} In spite of this they still sinned, AND did not believe in His wondrous works. {33} Therefore their days He consumed in futility, And their years in fear. {34} When He slew them, then they sought Him; And they returned and sought earnestly for God. {35} Then they remembered that God was their rock, And the Most High God their Redeemer. {36} Nevertheless they flattered Him with their mouth, And they lied to Him with their tongue; {37} For their heart was not steadfast with Him, Nor were they faithful in His covenant. {38} But He, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, And did not destroy them. Yes, many a time He turned His anger away, And did not stir up all His wrath;

18. (John 3:36 NKJV) "He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."

God's Wrath Against Mankind

(Romans 1:18 NKJV) For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,

(Ephesians 5:6 NKJV) Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

(Revelation 14:10 NKJV) "he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.

(Revelation 14:19 NKJV) So the angel thrust his sickle into the earth and gathered the vine of the earth, and threw it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.

Seven Angels With Seven Plagues

(Revelation 15:1 NKJV) Then I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvelous: seven angels having the seven last plagues, for in them the wrath of God is complete.

(Revelation 15:7 NKJV) Then one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden bowls full of the wrath of God who lives forever and ever.

The Seven Bowls of God's Wrath

(Revelation 16:1 NKJV) Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels, "Go and pour out the bowls of the wrath of God on the earth."
