Lesson: The Book of Revelation - Chapter 1

Email: info@icogsfg.org

SCRIPTURE READING: Revelation 1:1-20

GOLDEN TEXT:  Revelation 1:1

1. The Book of Revelation is the "revelation" of who? (Revelation 1:1). Who wrote the Book of Revelation? (Same verse). Was this "revelation" delivered by an angel? (Same verse). To whom was it delivered? (Same verse.)

Note: The English word "revelation" is from the Greek word: "apocalypse." Strong’s Concordance #602 defines the word as: "apokalupsis, ap-ok-al'-oop-sis; from G601; disclosure:--appearing, coming, lighten, manifestation, be revealed, revelation." We could say that the Book of Revelation opens with the phrase: "The Revealing of Jesus Christ."

Notice also that it was God who gave the revelation to Jesus and Jesus was to show His servants "things which must shortly take place."

2. What three reasons did the apostle John write (or bare record) the Book of Revelation? (Verse 2.)

Note: One of the reasons is that it was the "testimony of Jesus Christ." A "testimony" is a witness, or a report given judicially as a record. Jesus is verifying that this revelation is true.

3. Is a person "blessed " who reads and hears the words of this prophecy? (Verse 3.) Are all of the Saints who die in the faith or are martyred blessed? (Revelation 14:12-13, 16:15, 19:9,22:7, 14.) Does Revelation 1:3 also indicate that the end time is near?

Note: Back in the time of the apostle John, people did not have Bibles. The scriptures were read to them. People were blessed in hearing this prophecy.

4. About what date did John write this Book of "revelation"?

Note: The Book is generally dated around AD 95 or 96. According to Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons, writing around AD 180, this Book was written towards the end of the reign of the Roman emperor Domitian (AD 81-96). This Book was written at a time when Christians were undergoing persecution, which included the demand to worship the emperor as divine.

5. Who did John specifically address this "revelation" to? (Verse 4/)

Notice the phrase: "Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come." The word "grace" was a Greek greeting and the word "peace" was a Hebrew greeting. The phrase "who is and who was and who is to come" is referring to Jesus who is eternal or the self existent one. John referred to Jesus seven times in his Book of John as "I AM" which has the same meaning (John 8:24.)

6. Does Revelation 1:4 also mention "the seven Spirits" who are before God’s throne?

Note: Revelation 3 reveals more about the seven Spirits.

7. Is Jesus the faithful witness? (Revelation 1:5, 3:14, Jeremiah 42:5.) Does a faithful witness lie? (Proverbs 14:5.) Is Jesus the firstborn from the dead? (Revelation 1:5, Colossians 1:18.) Is Jesus to be the ruler over all of the kings of the earth? (Revelation 1:5, 17:14, 19:16, 1 Timothy 6:15.) Does Jesus love us? (Revelation 1:5, John 13:34-35, 14:21, 15:9, 12-13, Romans 8:35.) Does Jesus’ blood wash away our sins? (Revelation 1:5,1 John 1:7,Ephesians 2:13, Hebrews 10:19, 13:12, 20.) Will Jesus make us (the Saints) kings and priests to God the Father? (Revelation 1:6, 5:10.)

8. Will Jesus return in the clouds and will every eye see Him? (Revelation 1:7, Matthew 24:30, 26:64, Acts 1:9-11.) Will those who "pierced" Jesus at His crucifixion see Him? (Revelation 1:7, John 19:34, 37.) Will all of the tribes of the earth mourn when Jesus returns? (Revelation 1:7, Matthew 24:30.)

Note: Why will they mourn? You would think that people would be happy to see Jesus return and set up the Kingdom of God and reign on the earth for a thousand years and rule with the laws of God and with the love of God. But the truth of it is that man and his human nature hates good and loves evil (Psalms 52:3, 97:10, 109:5, Hosea 9:15, Micah 3:2, Zechariah 8:17, Romans 12:9.) The carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. (Romans 8:7.)

9. Is Jesus the "Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End"? (Revelation 1:8.) Is Jesus "the author and finisher of our faith and salvation"? (Hebrews 5:9 12:2.)

Notice the phrase: ""who is and who was and who is to come" Again this indicates that Jesus is eternal and self existent.

Is Jesus called the "Almighty"? (Revelation 1:8.) The word "Almighty" means "the all-ruling, Omnipotent sovereign God."

10. Where on the earth was John at when he received this "revelation of Jesus Christ" from God the Father? (Revelation 1:9).

Note: John was on the Island of Patmos in the Aegean Sea which is a small rocky island about ten miles long and six miles wide located off the southwest coast of Asia Minor (modern Turkey.) Patmos was used by the Romans as a place to banish criminals, who were forced to work at hard labor in the mines and quarries of the island. An early tradition said that John was in exile for 18 months.

11. When John received the "revelation", was he in "the spirit on the Lord’s Day" and did he hear a loud voice as the sound of a trumpet? (Revelation 1:10.)

Note: This phase "the Lord’s Day" is not referring to the Sabbath. Jesus said in Mark 2:27: "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. {28} "Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath." It is TRUE that the Sabbath is the true Lord’s Day but Revelation 1:10 is not talking about a day in the week, but a period of time called "the Day of the Lord" which is referred to many times in the Scriptures of the Bible and it is a major theme in the Book of Revelation. Revelation 1:10 also mentions that John heard a loud voice as the sound of a trumpet. Another major theme in the Book of Revelation is about trumpets and their role in "the Day of the Lord."

Notice also that the English word "spirit" in this verse is the Greek word "pneuma" which could be described as "a current of air, breath, spirit, human rational soul, mind." We could say that John was having a vision from God. Similarly Peter had a vision from God as recorded in Acts 10.

12. Who is speaking now in Verse 11 of Revelation 1? Does Jesus say that He is the "Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last"? Does He also tell John to write this "revelation" in a Book and to send it to the seven churches which are in Asia? Where are the seven churches located in Asia?

13. What did John see when he turned to see the voice that spoke to him? (Revelation 1:12.) Who was in the midst of the seven golden lampstands? (Revelation 1:13.)

Note: John saw seven separate golden lampstands and each lampstand had its own base, unlike the candelabra with seven candlesticks on one base in the Tabernacle (Exodus 25:31-37.) These seven golden lampstands represent the seven churches - See Revelation 1:20. The Church of God is the light of the world and the Church is the body of Christ. (1 Corinthians 12:27, Ephesians 4:12.) Jesus said that His disciples were the light of the world (Matthew 5:14.) Where did they get their light from? They got it from Jesus who said that He was the Light of the world (John 8:12, 9:5.) The apostle Paul said that Christ lives in us (Galatians 2:20.) An analogy of this might be to think of the moon and how its light is reflected from the sun. We must let our light shine by letting Jesus live in us and thereby reflecting His light. How would we do that? One way would be to show Jesus that we love Him by keeping the Ten Commandments (John 15:10.) We should always be ready to ask the question: What would Jesus do? Jesus said that the gates of Hades (the grave) will not prevail against His Church (Matthew 16:18.) God’s Church will exist throughout all time from its beginning at Pentecost to the return of Jesus Christ.

14. What did this individual look like that John saw? (Revelation 1:12-15.)

Note: This passage tells what Jesus Christ looks like in His glorified state. No man could look upon Him and view Him with human eyes (Exodus 33:20,) but He can manifest Himself so humans can perceive Him in a physical manifestation. Jesus Christ as the God of the Old Testament manifested Himself to Moses and only let Moses see His backside (Exodus 33:17-23.) Another example of this was when Christ appeared to Paul (Saul) as a bright light as he journeyed toward Damascus (Acts 9:1-9.)

Notice the phrase "Son of Man." Jesus used this phrase 84 times as a title in the Gospels referring to Himself as the Messiah.

Also notice the phrase "clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band." The Greek word for "garment" is "poderes." This is the word which the Greek Old Testament uses to describe the High Priest (Exodus 28:4, 29:5, Leviticus 16:4.) Jesus is our High Priest (Hebrews 3:1, 4:14, 6:20.)

15. What did Christ have in His right hand? (Revelation 1:16.)

Note: The seven stars are identified in Verse 20 as the angels of the seven churches.

16. What came out of Christ’s mouth? (Revelation 1:16.)

Note: What does the symbol of the sharp two-edged sword represent? The writer of the book of Hebrews defines it as: " For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart" (Hebrews 4:12 NKJV.) The "word of God" is the Bible but it could also be defined as Jesus Christ who is the Word of God. The apostle John said of Christ: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (John 1:1 NKJV.) The entire Bible is about Jesus who was the God of the Old Testament and the Savior of the New Testament. If you want to see how this two-edged sword is sharp, read the Sermon on the mount in Matthew 5-7.

17. What was His countenance like? (Verse 16.)

Note: His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength. The Greek word for "strength" is: "dunamis" and can defined as "force, miraculous power, mighty (wonderful) work." The N.I.V. translates this word as "brilliance." As an analogy, think of our sun as a light bulb and Jesus as the sun. The light bulb provides a lot of light when it is dark, but take the light bulb outside in the daytime and light from the light bulb is insignificant.

18. What did John do when he saw Christ in his vision? (Revelation 1:17.) What did Jesus do and say to John? (Same verse.)

19. What else did Jesus tell John? (Revelation 1:18.)

Note: Jesus lives now, but when He lived upon this earth as a flesh and blood human being (John 1:14) it was his destiny to die for all of mankind (John 3:16) so He was crucified and had His side pierced with a spear (John 19:34, 37,) He died (Luke 23:46) was buried (Luke 23:53) in the grave for three days and three nights (Matthew 12:40) and then He was resurrected back to life (Luke 24:1,7.) and now He has eternal glory (2 Timothy 2:10.)

Also notice that Jesus has the keys of Hades and of Death. The Greek word "Hades" refers to the grave. Jesus has the keys and the authority to unlock the "graves and death" of people who have died and are in their graves by resurrecting them and bringing them back to life, some to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation (John 5:22-30.)

20. What did Jesus Christ tell John to do? (Revelation 1:19.)

Note: Jesus told John to write down what He was revealing to him in the past, present and future.

21. Did Jesus reveal the meaning of the mystery of the seven stars and the seven golden lampstands? (Revelation 1:20.) What did He reveal that these symbols were? (Same Verse.)

Note: The word "mystery" is from the Greek word "musterion" and this word is defined as "a secret or mystery through the idea of silence imposed by initiation into religious rites." A mystery is a sacred secret and only meaningful to the initiate who possesses the key. Jesus now reveals some of the symbolism of the book of Revelation, and He has reserved the answers to these mysteries for His disciples and His church.

Notice that the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches. Each church has its own angel. Also notice that the seven golden lampstands are the seven churches.

In Conclusion: The Book of Revelation is about end time events and the Day of the Lord. It will be a blessing to us as we read study, and meditate on the words of this prophecy.

Scriptures

Scripture Reading:

(Revelation 1 NKJV) The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants; things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, {2} who bore witness to the word of God, and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, to all things that he saw. {3} Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near. {4} John, to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, {5} and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, {6} and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. {7} Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen. {8} "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End," says the Lord, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty." {9} I, John, both your brother and companion in the tribulation and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. {10} I was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet, {11} saying, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last," and, "What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia: to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea." {12} Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands, {13} and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. {14} His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; {15} His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters; {16} He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength. {17} And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, "Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. {18} "I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death. {19} "Write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after this. {20} "The mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands which you saw are the seven churches.

This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven."

(Matthew 24:30 NKJV) "Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

(Matthew 26:64 NKJV) Jesus said to him, "It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven."

(Hosea 9:15 NKJV) "All their wickedness is in Gilgal, For there I hated them. Because of the evil of their deeds I will drive them from My house; I will love them no more. All their princes are rebellious.

(Micah 3:2 NKJV) You who hate good and love evil; Who strip the skin from My people, And the flesh from their bones;

(Zechariah 8:17 NKJV) Let none of you think evil in your heart against your neighbor; And do not love a false oath. For all these are things that I hate,' Says the LORD."

(Romans 12:9 NKJV) Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good.

(Romans 8:7 NKJV) Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.

10.) (Revelation 1:9 NKJV) I, John, both your brother and companion in the tribulation and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.

11.) (Revelation 1:10 NKJV) I was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet,

(Mark 2:27-28 NKJV) And He said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. {28} "Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath."

12.) (Revelation 1:11 NKJV) saying, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last," and, "What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia: to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea."

13.) (Revelation 1:12 NKJV) Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands

(Exodus 25:31-37 KJV) And thou shalt make a candlestick of pure gold: of beaten work shall the candlestick be made: his shaft, and his branches, his bowls, his knops, and his flowers, shall be of the same. {32} And six branches shall come out of the sides of it; three branches of the candlestick out of the one side, and three branches of the candlestick out of the other side: {33} Three bowls made like unto almonds, with a knop and a flower in one branch; and three bowls made like almonds in the other branch, with a knop and a flower: so in the six branches that come out of the candlestick. {34} And in the candlestick shall be four bowls made like unto almonds, with their knops and their flowers. {35} And there shall be a knop under two branches of the same, and a knop under two branches of the same, and a knop under two branches of the same, according to the six branches that proceed out of the candlestick. {36} Their knops and their branches shall be of the same: all it shall be one beaten work of pure gold. {37} And thou shalt make the seven lamps thereof: and they shall light the lamps thereof, that they may give light over against it.

(1 Corinthians 12:27 NKJV) Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.

(Ephesians 4:12 NKJV) for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,

(Matthew 5:14 NKJV) "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.

(John 8:12 NKJV) Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life."

(John 9:5 NKJV) "As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world."

(Galatians 2:20 NKJV) "I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

(John 15:10 NKJV) "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love.

(Matthew 16:18 NKJV) "And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

14.) (Revelation 1:12-15 NKJV) Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands, {13} and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. {14} His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; {15} His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters;

(Exodus 33:17-23 NKJV) So the LORD said to Moses, "I will also do this thing that you have spoken; for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name." {18} And he said, "Please, show me Your glory." {19} Then He said, "I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion." {20} But He said, "You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live." {21} And the LORD said, "Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. {22} "So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. {23} "Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen."

(Acts 9:1-9 NKJV) Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest {2} and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. {3} As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. {4} Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?" {5} And he said, "Who are You, Lord?"
